Our church has a children's service before the evening service on Sundays. I drop Harmony off and then go back home to get the babies ready, and then we return to church. Tonight as I was driving Harmony there, our conversation went like this:
Harmony: Mommy, I don't really like going to church sometimes.
Me: Oh Harmony, but church is where we can learn about Jesus. It's God's house and we go there to hear more about Him and talk to Him!
*silence for a few seconds*
Harmony: Are God and Jesus really the same person?
*Silence as I try to think about explaining the trinity to a 3 1/2 year old!!)
Me: Well, Jesus is God's son. God is Jesus' Father. They live in Heaven.
Harmony: (before I could go on explaining) Is Joseph in Heaven?
Me: Yes, because he died. God sent Jesus as a baby. Remember we learned about Christmas? Then He grew and grew.
Harmony: Yeah, he growed and he growed and he growed big!
Me: Yes, he did and when he was a man, there were people that didn't like Him very much. They killed Him on the cross.
Harmony: And He got really bloody.
Me: Yes, he did. He died, but then He came back to life!! He is alive! He died on the cross for us. We have all done naughty things and deserve spankings and eventually to live in fire that would hurt really bad, but God sent Jesus to die on the cross. It was kind of like he took a really really hard spanking in our place. We can tell Him we are sorry for all the naughty things we've done. We can be friends with Him, talk to Him everyday, and someday we can go to Heaven to live with Him! You can talk to Jesus anytime. We talk to Him when we pray.
Harmony: But I want Him to come down so I can see Him and talk to Him.
Me: (pausing for a few seconds) You know what, Harmony? He IS going to come down so you can see Him and talk to Him.
Harmony: He is?
Me: Yes. I don't know what day it is going to be, but He IS going to come down through the clouds and we will see Him and talk to Him.
This conversation really made me think afterwards. I have always believed that Jesus is going to return someday... but I realized today that this belief hasn't always been believed with great expectancy. I've believed it as a fact... a fact just like David killed Goliath is a fact... but Jesus coming back was a fact that was somewhere in the future. With all that is going on in our world today, and all the prophesy that has been fulfilled, plus God's voice speaking to my heart about it, I believe Jesus' return really is at hand. -Then when I had that conversation with Harmony, and I saw the glimmer of excitement in her, it made me really excited as well. Jesus Is coming back and that's a fact that I want to believe with expectancy!!! It's time we lift our heads and look to the clouds. HE IS COMING.
HE IS COMING.
